Day 1 - Leaving Edinburgh, we begin with legends and stories surrounding William Wallace and Robert the Bruce - FREEEEDOM! It's then westwards towards Loch Lomond (you'll take the high road) before driving along the Argyle coastline (the ancient kingdom of Dalriada) - taste a fresh oyster at Loch Fyne, visit the mysterious Standing Stones of Kilmartin Glen and climb to the top of Dunadd Fort to find out how our nation was defined. With a last stop at Carnasserie Castle, it's a day of beautiful scenery, fresh air and fascinating stories! What better way to prepare for a lively night in bonny Oban with our home at the cosy Oban Backpackers.
Day 2 - Today we head deeper into the magical Highlands through some spectacular north west coast scenery with amazing stops and, weather permitting, walks in the magnificent Glencoe (hear the tragic tale of the MacDonald's Massacre) and/or Glen Nevis. It's a day of waterfalls, rugged mountains and majestic views! Following the lochs and glens, we make our way to Eilean Donan Castle before arriving at scenic Strome Ferry where the Stationmaster's House is our home for the next two nights.
Day 3 - A full and active day round the Isle of Skye, with lots of walks and time to take in the magic. You'll see the Cuillin Mountains, the Old Man of Storr (an incredible Jurassic pillar) and hear some amazing legends, visit the fascinating Kilt Rock, and take in absolutely awe-inspiring panoramas in the Quiraing. Perfect preparation for a few wee drams to reflect on a day of tales and legends
Day 4 - We start our day with a superb seafood and wildlife boat trip with a local fisherman. It's a great opportunity to get out on the Atlantic Ocean. After we'll make our way into Wester Ross enjoying walks through the brooding mountains of Torridon and Glen Affric. Tonight we stay in the lively village of Lewiston, just a few minutes from Loch Ness!
Day 5 - Time for a spot of monster hunting on Loch Ness this morning then it is an emotional visit to tragic Culloden battlefield (Bonnie Prince Charlie's last stand). As we head southwards we will pop into a wee distillery for a taste of the good stuff!
After lunch we'll take in stunning views of Loch Tummel before winding our way through the Perthshire hills to Glen Lyon and Fortingall Yew, the oldest living organism in Europe. It's just a short drive to our home, the little village of Weem.
After dinner, and armed with torches, it's time to go for a short walk through the woods. We'll venture into Castle Menzies for a ghostly tour around the castle that dates back to the 16th Century. Hear about the clan, legends and ghosts! After we'll recover with a wee dram in the local pub.
Day 6 - Our last day together - but still a full day - we drive straight out to St Andrews with plenty of time for you to explore this ancient religious capital - walk the Old Course, run down the beach (Chariots of Fire!), visit the castle and cathedral or do a bit of shopping - the choice is yours. After lunch we make our way back to Edinburgh along the Fife coastline - fishing villages, tales of witches and the grand Forth bridges.
We're certain that this will be a really special trip, and one you'll remember for a long time to come. We look forward to seeing you.
