8 Day Skye, Harris & Lewis Walking Tour
Explore a selection of the far flung islands off the west coast of Scotland known as the Hebrides. With loads of walks, local history and legends, amazing views and a few local characters on the way it's a perfect break to get away! Our walking tours are guided by Denise, originally from Germany, living in Scotland.
Day 1 - We depart Edinburgh for the dramatic Highlands and Islands! We begin with a walk in Balquhidder tot he Clan MacLaren rallying point. (Expect to walk 1.25 miles 1hr). After we wind our way through the glens to the stunning west coast and will arrive in Stromeferry or Plockton, both picturesque seaside villages, for the next three nights. Plockton has a choice of pubs and restaurants to eat in. The Stromeferry Guesthouse is £7.50 for 2 courses of homecooked food.
Day 2 - We'll take in the stunning landscape of Loch Duich and romantic Eilean Donan Castle on the way to Glenelg village, one of the most remote sposts in Britain accessible by road. Enjoy a very varied circuit walk taking in wild moorland, forest tracks and a beautiful walk along the shores of Loch Duich with a picnic lunch. (Expect to walk 8 miles 4.5 - 6.5hrs with 430m ascent) Afterwards we'll visit the brochs (iron age fortifications) of Glen Beag to discover our celtic ancestors.
Day 3 - This morning we'll take the easy-going circuit from Achmore Village that leads down to the beautiful shores of Loch carron. The outward leg crosses wet pastures below the steep crags of Creag Mhaol to reach the hamlet of Portchullin with it's fine views across the water before returning to Achmore along a beech-lined lane. Buy cheese, oatcakes and ice cream for lunch from the local dairy! (Expect to walk 5 miles 2 - 3hrs with 210m ascent) This afternoon we'll meet up with a local fisherman and enjoy a superb seafood and wildlife cruise.
Day 4 - A magical morning on the Isle of Skye. We'll take in the Black Cuillin Mountains before arriving at Portree, the main town on the Island for a wee wander to it's colourful harbour. After we'll enjoy views of the Old Man of Storr and the Quiraing before ambling along a short walk along the Trotternish Ridge. (Expect to walk 1.75 miles 1 - 2hrs with ascent 230m) We take the early afternoon ferry from Uig to Tarbert on the Isle of Harris where we'll enjoy a short walk (3 miles 1 - 2hrs) before making our way to Stornoway for the next three nights.
Day 5 - Today we explore Harris with a walk in Hushinish along glorious white sands and wild flower machair. (Expect to walk 5 miles 3 - 4hrs). After a picnic lunch, we 'll make our way further towards the southern end with St Clements Church, MacLoed's Stone and some of the best beaches you will ever see!
Day 6 - The best of Lewis is waiting for us today with an early morning visit to Dun Carloway Broch followed by the ancient Callanish Standing Stones. After, we'll make our way to the very top of Butt of Lewis for an exhillarating circular walk along dramatic seacliffs to a restored ancient chapel and delightful sandy bays. (Expect to walk 6.5 miles)
Day 7 - It's an early start as we catch the morning ferry back to the mainland port of Ullapool. Try to spot salmon leaping in Rogie Falls whilst we enjoy a short walk through the forest and along the river's edge. It's then time to take up our challenge for the day - climb Cairngorm, one of our Munroes (mountains over 3000ft). (775m ascent 3 - 5hrs) There is an easier alternative - the funicular railway which carries passengers almost to the top! Tonight we spend in amongst the Cairngorm Mountains.
Day 8 - This morning we return to Edinburgh for lunchtime, in plenty of time to catch afternoon flights.
