Culloden

Surely one of the most atmospheric and touching spots we visit, it is at first glance an unremarkable area of moorland spread out alongside a minor road. But what happened here, within just a few miles from inverness, has had an almost unbelievable impact on the history of the Highlands specifically, and Britain in general. Not to mention the wider world stage.

The battle that was to see the end of the Jacobite rebellions once and for all took place on April 16th 1746. Bad weather, arguably bad decision making, lack of numbers, the unfair actions of the Duke Of Cumberland, tired and hungry men are all believed to be factors which led to the down fall of Bonny Prince Charlie's predominantly Highland army. This after they had marched and fought almost to the doorstep of London itself.

Whichever side you take you can not disagree that a visit to Culloden Battlefield is both a sad and thought provoking one - how did the men feel as they charged the field that day? What effect was it to play on the highland way of life? Why did it have to end in such a manner? Many say there is a ghostly feel to the place and even when the sun is shining there is a definite cold sensation in the air.
